IntroductionThe statutory functions of the National Capital Authority (NCA) comprehensively establish the Australian Government’s continuing interest in the strategic planning, promotion, development and enhancement of Canberra as the National Capital. As part of these functions, the NCA is responsible for traffic management and maintenance of roads located on National Land. The intersection of Anzac Parade, Blamey Crescent and Currong Street is located between the suburbs of Reid and Campbell in Canberra’s Central National Area. The intersection forms an important connection between Reid and Campbell. The NCA plans to install traffic signals at the intersection to address road safety issues. This document has been produced to inform the community about the planned changes.
BackgroundIn 2007, Roads ACT commissioned an Accident Black Spot Study of the Anzac Parade, Blamey Crescent and Currong Street intersection. The study concluded that changes to traffic management arrangements were required. Signalisation of this intersection was recommended as one of the most cost effective mechanisms to reduce the number of accidents. Intersection worksThe NCA, in consultation with RoadsACT and the Department of the Environment Water Heritage and the Arts, has developed a design for the installation of traffic signals at this intersection. The design addresses road safety issues and enhances pedestrian safety without adverse impact on the environmental or heritage values of Anzac Parade. The solution has received endorsement from the Nation Building Black Spot Programme ACT Consultative Panel and will be co-funded by the Black Spot Funding Program. The works have been designed to ensure minimal change to the existing intersection and primarily consist of:
The installation of traffic lights will not change the geometry or envelope of the current intersection. TimeframeThe proposed works are scheduled to be completed by mid-2011. The final timing and extent of works remains subject to detailed design and approval, including Temporary Traffic Arrangements. Further information will be published by the NCA closer to the commencement of construction works. Public Information SessionA public information session was held on Thursday 22 July 2010.
